"Never trust a skinny chef" is one of Sam Choy's
famous quotes and this motto shows at his flagship restaurant
on the Eastern edge of Waikiki. The portions that are served are
not only large but delicious as well and if you are on a budget the
"Early Bird" special offers a very good 3 course meal
in the $20 range. The food ranges from traditional Hawaiian cuisine
to traditional items usually with a fusion twist.
If you are looking to go all out the "Variety Menu"
gives you an either/or choice of an appetizer, salad, entree
and dessert for a very resonable price of approximately $45 dollars
and for $15 dollars more you can order the wine pairings (half
glasses) which come with each course. The Variety Menu will give
you an opportunity to sample many different dishes (and some
very good wines - including a dessert wine).
The service is excellent and the wait-staff tend to be very knowledgeable
about the dishes offered. If the weather is nice (which it usually
is) ask for seating on the patio or you can enjoy the presentation
kitchen in the well lit and nicely appointed dining room.

The limited staff tend to be a bit surly but if you frequent the
establishment enough you can usually coax a smile. Late night
crowds tend to be folks "refueling" after a night
out at the local bars - therefore, crowds can be a bit thick after
"closing time". However, if your party is small you
can usually find a spot at the counter.

The Vienna Inn has been around for ages. It is the king of chili
dogs in the Vienna area. If you are looking for a great hotdog then
this is the place to go. The restaurant is easly overlooked as
it is tucked into a small ramshackle building almost in the center
of Vienna (across from the public library).
The restaurant also offers a wide select of micro-brew beer and
the selection changes often. The decor tends to be picnic style
and the surly staff (following in the tradition of the owner -
who I believe passed away) will usually expect you to keep track
of what you consume and report in when you cash out at the end of
your stay.
If you are looking for cheap eats and good beer Vienna Inn is a great
place to go just for the experience.

The fish tacos are a specialty but the shrimp tacos are equally
tasty. I especially enjoy the fajitas, burritos and daily quesadilla
special. Nachos are a great starter and they can be ordered in
a variety of configurations (ranging from snack to meal) be sure
to get a side of the wonderful guacamole. Daily specials add a
nice variety to the menu and usually offer a nice selection of
fresh ingredients. The only item that I have not cared for so far

Shopping in the area is a nice way to work up and appetite and you
can visit the "Surf Museum" across the street for
some interesting surfing history - it's free but donations
are accepted if you enjoy the offerings. Be sure to stop in for
a great shave ice at the general store if you still have an appetite
after your meal. People watching around the restaurant is also
a great deal of fun - so if you can get a table outside grab it.
The only drawback is that this restaurant serves no alcohol.
Not necessarily a bad thing but the meals would be absolutely
incredible with a nice cold margarita. However, you can bring
your own wine or beer for a small corkage fee.

Sunny Side is best known for some of the best pies in the area. The
offer both slices and whole pies for carry out. The seating area
is small but if you are in a rush there is also a carry-out counter
on the outside of the restaurant. Lunch lines tend to get pretty
long at the outside counter but if you have time to kill you can
usually get a seat at a table inside.

enjoyable are the stuffed chicken wings, beef with basil and
the "western" ribs with a Thai seasoning.

Some of the best local Cajun and Creole food in Northern Virgina.
RT's tends to be a bit on the pricey side but the quality of
the the preparation and ingredients is worth the cost. Portions
are large and there are a large selection of appetizers. As is
typical of most authentic cajun restaurants most food is not
for those on a diet!
Especially tasty on the menu - "Cloaked Shrimp" wrapped
in bacon and brushed in barbecue sauce served with a wonderful
corn maque choux (pronouced - mock shoo), traditional gumbo,
fried catfish smothered with shrimp etoufee and of course sausage
and peppers. Be sure to ask for the sampler of hot sauces if like
spice. There is usually quite a large selection of hot sauces
ranging from mild and vinegary to take your head off hot.
Outdoor seating is available during nice weather and there is
the occasional band playing in the plaza. Indoor seating is comfortable
and intimate with subdued lighting and dark colors. Sit in a booth
at the bar if you want to be the farthest removed from other diners.

Dishes are prepared with care and with the freshest available
ingredients. Downstairs dining around the bar tends to be more
casual while the upstairs is best for large parties and more intimate
affairs. Decorations are handpicked by one of the owners and
compliment the restaurant nicely.
Daily specials and seasonal dishes round out a "smallish"
menu and there are an excellent selection of wines. Steaks are
hand rubbed aged beef and the crabcakes are the best in the area
(available seasonally) with only enough "binder"
to hold the handpicked crabmeat together. Be sure to ask about
the soup of the day - they are fantastic.

A staple "diner" type of coffee shop open 24 hours
a day on the western edge of Waikiki. Prices are very reasonable
and protions are large. Stick with breakfast here since many
of the dinners tend to be a bit disappointing. If you are hungry
there are all you can eat pancakes (served with coconut pancakes
and "traditional" syrup) and the platters tend to
be quite large. The eggs benedict served with smoked turkey and
ham is a great stick to your ribs choice. Be prepared for a line
at typical breakfast times. However the restaurant is spacious
and there is a breakfast counter available.
